The New ROMAC
I know all about ROMAC! Known ‘em for years. This is a statement we have heard too many times over the years. Sadly, in every case, this statement was simply incorrect. While it is true that ROMAC has stayed true to its roots since we started in 1958, we have made great changes, additions, and developments since our genesis, and we are now in our third generation.
The biggest misconception is that ROMAC strictly deals in reconditioned and surplus electrical products. We do that (and do it with pride), but, in actuality over 65% of what we sell is new, and most of that we manufacture in house. We build, rebuild and trade in 600V-38kv switchgear, 600V switchboards, circuit breakers, fuses, transformers, motors, motor control, switches, and components for all of the above.
ROMAC began in Huntington Park, California when our founder, Phil Rosenfield, newly out of the Merchant Marines was looking for an opportunity to utilize his knowledge and experience in the areas of electrical material and machinery. He formed a company named ROMAC (standing for Rosenfield Machinery). Phil started out by recovering and selling machinery, its components, including electrical components. By the early 1970s, ROMAC had begun identifying itself as an electrical equipment dealer.
ROMAC quickly became known as a reliable resource for the material needed to keep industrial operations running. We have stayed available 24/7 from the beginning. It was not uncommon to find ROMAC employees working through the night, weekends, and on holidays to keep production lines moving. We still do that today! Just call us at (800) 77-ROMAC or visit us on the web at www.romacsupply.com.
In 1974, ROMAC moved to their current seven acre facility in Commerce, California which allowed for much larger inventories and shop spaces. ROMAC has virtually every manufacturer’s switchgear and motor control from current vintages back to the 1950’s and the same can be said for most of our product groups as well.
1975 brought a new facet to ROMAC’s capabilities. We started Power Controls Incorporated (PCI), a UL listed switchgear manufacturing operation. While our capability for manufacturing standard products was evident, where we really shined was in customization and short lead time inquiries. Today, PCI has all the designs and tooling required to handle close to 98% of every manufacturing process in house. We build medium voltage metal enclosed switchgear, metal clad switchgear, low voltage switchboards, transfer switches, feeder duct, and custom products.
In 2002, to meet demand in the marketplace, we formed Hardware Resource Company (HRC), manufacturing mounting hardware kits for molded case circuit breakers. We currently have over 80 designs to mount molded case breakers into all domestic manufacturer’s switchboards made over the last 35 to 40 years. We have since added to that line by producing the industry’s first universal circuit breaker enclosure. We have designs from 250 amp through 4000 amp enclosures.
In 2009, we purchased Power Technologies, whose specialty product was an Industrial UPS maintenance bypass cabinet. When an industrial UPS system requires maintenance on their batteries, the MBC keeps the facility up and running. We currently make units for Eaton’s Powerware Division and others.
All of our product divisions serve to provide industry with options to address and solve their sourcing issues. Quality, safety, integrity, innovation and inventory are not just words to us; they have always been our promise at ROMAC.
Come to think of it, nothing has changed much at ROMAC. We’re just getting better with age.
