An Electrical Inspector’s Role in Reducing Electric Shock Drowning

You would think that as someone who lives and conducted electrical inspections in Michigan, a state with 3,288 miles of freshwater shoreline and countless marinas, I would have known about electric shock drowning (ESD) before joining NFPA®. Well, you would be wrong; I had no idea what ESD was until I started working at NFPA.

At an electrical inspectors’ conference, I began to wonder if I was the only inspector who had been in the dark about ESD. So, I asked if anyone knew what ESD was, and, surprisingly, very few knew what it was. This was shocking to me, but also provided me with an opportunity to educate them. So, how can an electrical inspector have an impact? We must first answer the question, “What is ESD?”
