OSHA 1910.137 (b) and ASTM F496 cover the in-service care and use of rubber insulating gloves, which includes regular inspection and testing of in-service electrical protective equipment. To that end, rubber insulating gloves must be inspected before each use. Visually inspecting rubber gloves identifies physical, chemical or ozone damage. Inflating the gloves with air or otherwise stretching the surface helps identify age and ozone damage as well as other physical damage such as snags, abrasions or tears. Expand the gloves no more than 1.25-1.50 times their normal size. Listen for escaping air to detect holes. If a portable inflator is not available, use a rubber insulating glove inspection tool, such as the Voltgard® VT-12 Glove Inflation Tool, to simplify daily rubber glove visual examination by blocking escaping air when rolled.

  • To use, slide the end of the cuff into the "mouth" of the tool and roll the glove over and around the tool to create a tight seal for better inflation and visual inspection of the rubber glove working area
  • Design conveniently fits inside of glove bags for ease of transportation/use
  • Includes "Remember to test your gloves!" safety message printed on the tool as a visible reminder

Testing is also a critical and required component to maintaining arc flash and electrical safety, as the reduction in effectiveness of rubber insulating gloves may not always be readily apparent to the user. ASTM F496 applies to the in-service care of rubber insulating gloves. If you do not have the equipment required to perform these electrical tests, there are accredited independent testing facilities that can perform the acceptance and in-service testing on behalf of end users, such as Saf-T-Gard’s Voltgard® Test Lab, which proudly offers all of these services and more, including:
